Example scenario: Retail Private Label — from Catalogue Product to Own Line
Anonymised example scenario: shows a typical project workflow, not a verified client report.
A typical project flow, summarized in anonymized form: a retailer with several stores wants to build a housewares line under his own brand instead of selling interchangeable wholesale goods.
Starting situation
The trade margin on bought-in branded goods was thin, and the same products sat on competitors' shelves. A private label was to bring margin and recognition — without blowing up tooling investments or starting with compliance risks: as the brand owner, the retailer legally counts as the manufacturer.
Approach
Instead of expensive new development we took the ODM route: proven catalogue products from two vetted manufacturers, adapted in colour, material grade and details. The retailer supplied the packaging design; we turned it into production-ready print data and agreed materials and MOQs with the factory.
Before series release we clarified marking and conformity (CE where applicable, food-contact evidence for individual items) and filed a golden sample per product. The first run went with in-production checks and final AQL inspection; delivery was DDP to the central warehouse.
Result
- A distinct product line with its own identity — without tooling investment thanks to the ODM approach.
- A noticeably better margin than bought-in branded goods at comparable quality.
- A clean compliance foundation: conformity documents and marking from the first run.
- Reorders without quality drift thanks to the golden sample and AQL inspection per batch.
